The red house

The red house

Francesco Catarinolo
Synopsis

Thirty years ago the Italian explorer Robert gave everything up to move to eastern Greenland - home of the Ivis, a population at risk of extinction since when the end of the seal trade deprived this community of its only form of economic sustenance: the hunt. In recent years, all this has led to increased rates of alcoholism, depression, and suicide. But Gerda, 14 years old, she wants to hunt. Her father, a former hunter, works as a cook in The Red House, a refuge founded by Robert, providing work for locals who have been left with nothing. What brought him to Greenland to take up the cause of the Ivis. Something emerging from his past better explains his motivations, allowing us to understand that what he is trying to do, is to turn back and to "give back", in an act of humility.
