MMM Ortles
The museum is in Solda in the Ortles mountains at an altitude of 1900m. Built below ground level, it is dedicated to the theme of ice, and concentrates on skiing, ice mountaineering, and the polar expeditions. The visitor literally goes into the mountain to gain an idea of what the glaciers of the Arctic and Antarctic are like, to understand the force of avalanches, and how many difficulties artists who paint ice encounter. The museum is reached through a large fissure cut into the hillside's supporting wall, lined with stone. The short ramp leads into the depths of the artificial cavern completely constructed with reinforced concrete. The steep deep structure gets light from above through a strip of glass cutting through the surface like a glacial crevasse.
