Brunico Castle
Description
Brunico (Bruneck) Castle is perched, visible from afar, on a hill above the town of Brunico. It was built in 1250 by the town’s prince-bishop, Bruno von Kirchberg. Continual extensions and conversions followed, based upon the purpose of the castle. There was an extensive refurbishment in the late nineteenth century. In 2004 the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation purchased the medieval building, ceding its use to the town of Brunico. The town, in turn, offered it to extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who opened a branch of his Messner Mountain Museum dedicated to mountain peoples here in July 2011.
