First call of 2025: ten new projects

Reading time

The South Tyrolean Film Fund and Commission IDM supports a total of ten projects for the first call of 2025. Approximately 50 days of shooting for these projects are scheduled for South Tyrol.

Eight projects – including Woodwalkers 3 – will receive production funding. Written by Gerrit Hermans and directed by Jan Fehse, the third instalment of the successful Familytainment franchise is scheduled for seven days of shooting in the Schnalstal valley, which is expected to begin this August. In Switzerland, British actress Helen Mirren assumes the role of Patricia Highsmith. The Italian/British co-production recounts the writer’s last days, which she spent in the Swiss mountains. The project, directed by renowned Dutch filmmaker Anton Corbjin, will be filmed in Bolzano/Bozen, among other locations. Lars Jessen brings the refugee drama Spaziergang nach Syrakus to the big screen, with filming scheduled for five days this summer at locations including Bolzano and Meran/Merano.

Elisa – Io la volevo uccidere, a drama directed by Leonardo Di Costanzo and starring Barbara Ronchi in the lead role, tells the story of Elisa Zanetti, who murdered her sister and burned the body. In prison, she confronts the harsh reality of her past actions.

Over the course of 18 days of shooting, South Tyrol will serve as the backdrop for several scenes from Bianco, which depicts one of the most tragic Alpine expeditions of the 1960s: the ascent of the Central Pillar of Frêney on Mont Blanc. The film is an Italian/Belgian co-production directed by Daniele Vicari.

Wiener pre tv and South Tyrolean director Wolfgang Moser explore a story from South Tyrol in their documentary project Die Familie Schuen – Ladinien, Kleine Heimat, große Welt. Their film is dedicated to the Ladin population, highlighting their language, music, and traditions.

The only series represented in this year’s first call covers one of the largest art forgery cases in Germany involving more than 1,000 counterfeits of bronze statues by artist Alberto Giacometti. The documentary series Master Forger by Stefano Strocchi blends true crime and thriller elements. Six days of filming will take place in South Tyrol.

Two film projects will receive funding for the preparation of production: director Martina Valentina Baumgartner’s documentary film project Baumi – Ein Porträt über das was bleibt explores the life and achievements of her father Karl Baumgartner, one of South Tyrol’s most renowned film producers.

In Limbs of one Body director Kaspar Panizza portrays the success story of the sisters and professional cyclists Fariba and Yulduz, who fled Afghanistan, continued to pursue their training, and competed in the Paris Olympics to represent their home country.
