The Red House

Francesco Catarinolo, Peter Bardehle, 2018
Synopsis

Robert Peroni is a mountaineer and explorer, born in South Tyrol. In 1985 during an exploration in Greenland he came in contact with a population he had never met before, the Ivis, a community of hunters living in the small town of Tasilaaq, who are experiencing a strong historical-social change due to the contamination of Western culture. In the early Eighties the seal trade has been banned, so in Tasilaaq unemployment has increased to more than 90%, causing depression in the new generations. Robert decided to move there and, founding  inspiration in South Tyrol Masi's tourism model, he bought a little red wooden house. The documentary focuses on Robert's effort to save a community of 3500 persons. But East Greenland is a rich land. In the next twenty years oil extraction and mining for gold will be a hope for this people. But it could be late, in twenty years this generation will be extinct. Will Robert succeed in his attempt? Will the Ivis take up the challenge set out by Peroni?
