Die Rattenlinie (aka Last Exit Südtirol)

Die Rattenlinie (aka Last Exit Südtirol)

Karin Duregger, 2014
Synopsis

A key focus of this documentary is to present the role of the Catholic Church in assisting the escape plans of the NS-war criminals to South Tyrol.

Nationalism and Germanness played a large role in what was then South Tyrol, and it is in this context that these activities have to be examined.

South Tyrol was territorial and constitutionally, ‚no man's land" at the time. Only here in Europe was it possible to establish such a close-knit network of supporters after the war.

The film draws on new research by Austrian historians - and accompanies - exclusively - the great-granddaughter of Martin Bormann in their search for clues in the region. The Director Karin Duregger was able to find half a dozen eyewitnesses and goes with them to the old showplaces in South Tyrol.
