Der Heilige Berg

Der Heilige Berg

Reinhold Messner
Synopsis

In 1979, Peter Hillary together with 3 other mountaineers attempt to climb first the powerful vertical ice Mingbo west wall, 2000 m high, of Ama Dablam, Nepals holy mountain, dancing grounds of the gods . In the last third of the ascent in the wall a powerful ice avalanche shatters the dreams of the four young New Zealanders: One dead and three injured hanging on a single anchor on the ropes: 1500 meters abyss deep down below. As the indigenous population worships Ama Ablam as 'sacred' and therefore untouchable people are angry, fearing the vengeance of the gods. Sir Edmund Hillary, Peters father, the famous first climber of Mount Everest, desperately calls for  a daring helicopter action, while the three survivors cut the fourth man off the rope and begin a snail-like descent. In an unprecedented demonstration of comradeship an entire group of climbers on the Ama Ablam rope down severely injured Peter Hillary and the surviving two friends from the rock hell and lead them to safety.
