Chico is a teenager, his now dead father was Italian and his mother Marilou is from the Philippines. They live in Friuli with Ennio, his mother's new boyfriend, a foreman who recruits and exploits illegal migrant workers. Chico goes to school, but at the same time - to help support the family - he is forced to work in Ennio's building yards.
Suddenly it seems his fate could change: an elderly friend of his father's, Ettore, comes looking for Chico and offers to become a strange sort of tutor for him. Once the boy has overcome his initial distrust, Ettore manages to kindle in him a profound interest for a form of knowledge radically different from what school offers. Ettore's influence is so powerful that it eventually gives Chico the strength to rebel. But a terrible discovery involving Ettore, will put Chico in front of a hardest trial.
