Max & Hélène

Max & Hélène

Giacomo Battiato, 2014
Synopsis

Hélène Blondel, the young daughter of the French Honorary Consul in Venice during the Nazi occupation, fakes her documents and pretends to be Jewish. She gives herself up to the Nazis in order to be with her love, the Jew Max Sereni. Together, they manage to escape from the train that is deporting them to a concentration camp in Poland. But they are caught, separated, and both believe that the other is dead. But it is not so. Max survived a massacre and Hélène, after having become the favourite victim of a sadistic Nazi officer, Thomas Koeller, manages to escape. We are now in 1960 and Max returns from behind the Iron Curtain.  His life has but one meaning: to find Thomas Koeller and avenge Hélène. He infiltrates the neo-Nazis and simultaneously finds the monster and learns that Hélène has not been killed. Yet, for some reason, Hélène is refusing to testify against Koeller. This will be the moment of truth for Max, compelled to choose between revenge, justice and compassion.
