Three world premieres across Venice and Toronto

Reading time

It’s that time of the year again, with the world-famous Venice International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival just around the corner. Three films supported by the IDM Film Commission Südtirol will celebrate their world premiere at the two festivals.

The 81st Venice International Film Festival will take place between 28 August and 7 September 2024, and the IDM Film Commission will also be there and take part in the different industry events. As will Maura Delpero, from Bolzano, who wrote and directed Vermiglio, a period drama premiering at the Festival and competing for The Golden Lion on 2 September. This is Delpero’s film second important visit to Venice after taking part in the Gap-Financing Market during last year’s Venice Production Bridge. The film was supported by the IDM Film Commission during its development and production stages. It talks about the lives of three sisters and their father in the mountain hamlet of Vermiglio after World War II and was shot, among other locations, in Egna and Ospizio di San Floriano (TAKE visited the locations to speak with the director). The film was co-produced by Cinedora and Rai Cinema (Italy), Charades Productions (France), and Versus (Belgium).

The IDM Film Commission will cross the pond for the TIFF, the Toronto International Film Festival, held between 5 and 15 September. The festival’s 49th edition marks the world premiere of Polvo Seran (They Will Be Dust) by Carlos Marques-Marcet, part of the TIFF’s Platform lineup. The film is a co-production by Kino Produzioni based in Rome, Lastor Media from Barcelona, and Alina Film operating out of Geneva. It was shot, among other places, in Castelrotto and Fié allo Sciliar. Toronto’s Gala Presentations will also feature the debut of the new version of William Tell, the brainchild of Northern Irish  director Nick Hamm, which was also partially filmed in Alta Val Venosta. Both projects were supported by the IDM Film Commission during their production phase. Maura Delpero‘s Vermiglio will also travel from Venice to Toronto as part of the TIFF’s Special Presentations.

The IDM Film Commission expresses its heartfelt congratulations and looks forward to the lively and inspiring exchanges which will take place during the festivals.
